KEY 01
This is a run-first offense. With 56.8% runs overall and 60.3% on first down, our front has to win the line of scrimmage early in every possession. Do not let first-down runs set up manageable second downs. Box integrity and gap discipline are non-negotiable on first and ten.
KEY 02
Red zone is where they commit hardest to the run, 73.3%. Once they cross the 20, stop the run inside the red zone before you sell out on pass defense. Our linebackers and safeties need to be downhill and assignment-sound in that compressed space. Give them a gap and they will take the touchdown on the ground.
KEY 03
Their 3rd-down splits tell two different stories. On 3rd and short they run 69% of the time, so our short-yardage package must be gap-sound and physical. On 3rd and long they throw 78%, so play coverage discipline and do not give up the sticks. Getting them to 3rd and long is the win, because their 44.1% conversion rate means they will fail more than half the time if we force that situation.
Bottom linePenn State is a methodical, run-heavy offense with a solid but not elite PPA of 0.27 and a low explosive rate of 11.3%, meaning they will try to grind you down rather than beat you over the top. Limit chunk plays, win first-down run defense, and force 3rd and long situations to keep their conversion rate working in our favor.
