Illinois built this roster heavily through the transfer portal, pulling 38 transfers (33%) with Bielema leaning hard on non-FBS pipelines — 19 of those 38 came from below the FBS level, a volume and source mix that explains why only 13% of their matched roster carries a blue-chip rating against Maryland's 17%, with an average recruiting grade of 3.1★ versus our 3.18★. The roster skews older and more experienced than ours — 51% upperclassmen to our 43%, though the per-player average (1.8 years) is actually slightly thinner than Maryland's 1.91 — and zero redshirts means they've been burning eligibility straight through with no depth stockpiling. The offensive situation is almost a mirror of ours at the skill level (41% receiving production back, 74% rushing), but their passing return is essentially zero at 1% versus our 95%, so whoever is throwing the ball this fall is doing it with almost no returning production behind him. On the DMV front, they've got two locals in Osada (K) and Rhea (LB), and with 35% of the roster turning over after this season, the portal competition for that upperclassmen wave is where we should be paying attention.
